Freebies or Corruption – ‘Y’- factor on Tamilnadu Politics !

The Politics in Tamilnadu has been running through a roller coaster ride for several decades. The Two most dominant regional parties DMK and ADMK face-off publicly wreaking havoc to regional as well as  national shame. The stinky feud between them is so sublime that it has become easier for niche parties like DMDK to gain public confidence.

The words of Abraham Lincoln is worth recollecting at this juncture,I quote “You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.  To put it simply, no one can be befooled forever.

Film celebrities reigned on the political throne of Tamilnadu for many years. Public acceptance of this phenomenon has been much stronger and deep-rooted in Tamilnadu, which cannot be seen in any other Indian state. Few of them are still regarded as demi-gods. They entice and ploy charismatic influence both on and off the screen. This idiosyncratic behaviour of state politics led the people bear extreme tolerance towards various malpractices, corruption and red-tapism. So, are the political leaders only to be blamed ? Not at all !

The general public are lured by the freebies, etc offered during election campaigning. This is a major weapon for all the political parties to attract votes apart from their flamboyant speeches. This time around the competition has been fierce especially with ADMK raising like a phoenix from ashes. One would just go nuts seeing at the list of freebies. While the DMK promised a grinder or a mixie and 20 kg free rice for the poor, the AIADMK offered four goats, one cow, a fan, mixie and grinder. It also promised free laptops for plus-one and plus-two students. The DMK promised Rs 4 lakh as loan for each self-help group while the AIADMK upped the offer to Rs 10 lakh. Freebies war rippled across all media channels and soon became the talk of the town throughout India.

DMK had the last laugh ! Alas ! You either run over thorn or it pricks you, in both cases, you will be hurt.

No doubt people’s verdict is tough to analyze. Was that in favour of party offering more freebies (or) to a party less dented with corruptive practices ? Your best bet to find any other reason !

As I ponder over it again and again, I only feel that the ‘Y’ factor, whatever it may be, that has influenced the current political outome for Tamilnadu is not completely legitimate. The people of Tamilnadu have dug the grave still deeper without reckoning ways to come out of it. Whoever feels the DMK’s dust has settled, before you take a sigh of relief, let me say, do not forget the past at the dawn of ADMK’s new innings.

A glass half-filled with water may be half-full or half-empty depending upon how you perceive; however what if the glass has holes all-over or cracks beneath it. Well ! this is exactly the state of affairs of tamilnadu politics. We know about our elected leaders yet we simply think we don’t have a choice but to mask ourselves from the surrounding holes and cracks.
